Distillery District Engagement Photography

Today I am pretty psyched to share with you one of our most unique engagement sessions ever.  We often get asked the question “what happens if it rains?”  Well, the long answer is we can reschedule if it’s supposed to be an absolute downpour (this is sort of rare), but if there’s just a chance of rain I usually ask our couples to bring an umbrella and roll with it.  The rain can be so romantic!  This shoot is a perfect example of a romantic rainy day engagement shoot in Toronto.

Keira & Peter booked the Distillery District for their engagement session, however when it started pouring rain we asked a few nice shops if it would be okay to take a some shots inside while it was raining too hard to shoot outside.  We were so thrilled that three separate Distillery District businesses were absolutely lovely to us and welcomed us in!

First up was the awesome Hastens Beds Canada.  Wow.  This shop is incredible and has the most beautiful and luxurious beds you can imagine.  They were so incredibly kind to us and totally encouraged Keira & Peter to have a snuggle on the beds and inside their store so we could capture some beautiful moments for them. What a totally unique and beautiful space to have your engagement shoot take place!  This is why I love my job – the everyday becomes the unexpected!

From there we managed to shoot a few images outside, despite the rain, however we quickly took cover once more inside the kick ass shoe store John Fluevog Shoes.  They even have a sign that they welcome photography, which was so great!  I fell in love with their decor, and their shoes (mental note – go shopping!)  Once again Keira and Peter were flawless on-camera and we had so much fun playing around in all the different spaces.  I love the portraits of these two on the couch inside the shoe store – so gorgeous!

The final stop on our mini-tour of the Distillery District was Balzac’s Coffee, which has a beautiful coffee bar and magnificent chandelier hanging from above.  There was an event going on upstairs so we quietly took a few shots in the front part of the cafe (with the cafe owner’s blessing) before we made a quiet exit.  We always think it’s so important to be respectful of those businesses who are so kindly sharing their space with you.

A huge thanks to our troopers Keira & Peter.  You two were so much fun to work with and we can’t wait until your big wedding day at Hockley Valley this summer!  Also a big thanks to the wonderful businesses who were so welcoming of our shooting inside your stores – Hastens Beds Canada, John Fluevog Shoes and Balzac’s Coffee – we really appreciate it and we know it meant a lot to our gorgeous couple as well!

Cheers,
Lisa & Justin

    Ann - Beautiful shots!

Rosewater Room Wedding Photography

We had quite a busy winter last year, which is why I’m still catching up on all of our blog posts.  I’m really excited to get this wedding posted today!

Johanna & Martin are a beautiful couple who got ready at the King Edward Hotel (who doesn’t love this place?)  We also did their wedding party photos at the King Eddy Hotel before we walked over to the Rosewater Room for the wedding ceremony and reception.

There is a beautiful room at the King Edward Hotel just off the front lobby that I love using for wedding photos.  It has huge ceilings, white curtains from floor-to-ceiling and gorgeous chandeliers.  It made the perfect spot for a “first look” for Johanna & Martin on their wedding day, and a great place for some Bride & Groom portraits.  We also shot a few in the library bar beforehand with the groomsmen.  Being the holiday season, the absolutely gorgeous Christmas tree in the centre of the King Edward Hotel’s lobby made for a wonderful backdrop also!

The adorable Bride & Groom walked over with their wedding party to their Rosewater Room wedding ceremony and reception.  Everything was perfect – the happy couple read vows to each other, that were actually love notes from high school (they were high school sweethearts!)  How cute (and rare these days) is that?

After all the major events were finished and dancing had begun, we took a few last portraits of the newlyweds outside on the Rosewater Room’s patio by the fire – so romantic!

Congratulations Johanna & Martin – you two were so much fun to work with and your wedding was absolutely stunning!  All the very best in your life together.

Cheers,
Lisa & Justin

Hazelton Manor Wedding Photography

So, with a wedding this fantastic, where do I begin?  Ilana and Josh were one of our most fun couples of 2012!  We had the pleasure of shooting not one but two awesome engagement sessions (you can check out their gorgeous CNE engagement session here), and their wedding was full of amazing photo ops and great people in their families and wedding party.

The day began at the hotel for getting ready pictures and the big “first look” for the bride & groom (love the look when Josh & Ilana saw each other for the first time – magic!)

We then had the most amazing time shooting some wedding portraits inside the lobby at the historic Elgin and Winter Garden Theatre in downtown Toronto on Yonge Street.  There are few spots in Toronto that offer such a classic and historic ambience for wedding photos as this breathtaking theatre.

We continued with the ‘theatre’ theme, but this time it was the AMC movie theatre at Interchange Way in Vaughan.  What a unique spot to shoot wedding formals!  We love a new opportunity, and it was the perfect place to shoot considering this was in November and a bit chilly outside.  Josh and Ilana had many laughs with their wedding party, even tossing around popcorn for the camera!

Since we did all the photography before the ceremony (something we commonly do to give the couple more photo time and flexibility in their schedule), we arrived at the beautiful Hazelton Manor in Vaughan for the traditional Jewish bedekken ceremony, where Josh ‘veiled’ his beautiful bride before her walk down the aisle to become his wife.  The Jewish wedding ceremony took place directly afterward and Ilana & Josh were pronounced officially married!  As you can see from the photos, tons of dancing (a lively hora to start things off), food and fun were had by all to celebrate the newlyweds.  Check out the AMAZING candy bar at the reception – it was so cool and I don’t mind telling you I took home a bag of sweet goodness at the bride’s insistence;)

I also have to mention that we had the pleasure of working with our favourite wedding cinematography team on this wedding - Honey and Dear.  They are simply fantastic and ridiculously talented.  If you need a videographer for your wedding – please check them out!  They are the best to work with and always flow seamlessly alongside us as the photography team.

Congratulations Ilana & Josh!  It was truly an honour to photograph your wedding day, and we are so happy you chose us to capture it for you.  We wish you nothing but the very best in your marriage and in the future of your family!

Cheers,
Lisa & Justin

Hart House Engagement Photography at U of T

Hart House College at the University of Toronto is one of our very favourite places to shoot!  I adore the ivy covered walls, stone archways and always lovely light.  I also love The Great Hall, where there is this great little nook that looks straight out of a castle.  So, when Jeannette & Igor asked for Hart House engagement photos, I was very eager to shoot there again!

These two are just beautiful inside and out, and are incredibly photogenic (thanks for making my job easy!)  Jeannette & Igor looked fantastic not only for their engagement session, but right after the shoot they headed over to a Yorkville restaurant to celebrate their engagement with their families.  Igor is from the US and this will have been a rare opportunity for both families to get together and celebrate before the big day.

Congratulations Jeannette & Igor – we are very excited for your Eagles Nest Golf Club wedding this Fall!

Cheers,
Lisa & Justin

What I’m Working On … | Annie & Alex at The AGO

While we work away this busy season, shooting and editing images like crazy, I wanted to take a moment to share an image we created this past weekend at Annie & Alex’s wedding that I just adore.

Annie & Alex got married at The AGO in Toronto, and it was our first time shooting there so we were very excited about having the opportunity.  This part of the gallery is called The Salon, and what a dramatic backdrop for the bridal portraits!  I fell in love with this room and we created this portrait for the Bride & Groom to remember their Art Gallery of Ontario wedding.

Much more to come but for now, here’s the image from The Salon, inside The AGO:
